What We Are Listening To: Monster Children NYC #7
Hello, my name is Naz Kawakami. I’m the Deputy Editor of Monster Children based in New York City. Did you know that for a number of years, I was a radio DJ? You probably did because I never shut the fuck up about it. My show was called Night Drive, every Thursday from midnight to 3AM. Those were good times. A lot of sex, drugs, and partying were done in that little Honolulu radio studio. None of it done by me, but it’s still cool to think about.
Anyway, since taking this Editor job, I spend most of my day the way I spent my days as a DJ: listening to music. Some good, some bad. Some old, some new. Every Friday, I compile the week’s worth of music into a playlist. Songs we’ve been enjoying, songs we’ve just (re)discovered, and songs that offer a preview into what features we have coming out soon. Not the newest, not the rarest, just good music. The mood of the week over at the MC New York City office for you to judge and enjoy.
Last week I blew it and didn’t post one of these because I was in LA at the great gathering of the Monster Children. Australia, Los Angeles, and New York offices converged for a showdown. Blood was spilt and Juneshine were drank. Anyway, sorry for being such an idiot. This week, though, I am at home in Honolulu and have been making every attempt to chill the fuck out. That in mind, this weeks playlist is very smooth, mostly old, is often danceable, and consists mainly of what my father once called, ‘baby making music.’
Between the moans and groans of Chakachas’ ‘Jungle Fever’, the indignant desperation of Lovage’s ‘To Catch A Thief’, and Bill Withers’ mumbling suspicion on ‘Who Is He?’, this week is falling on the sexier side. You are likely to fall in heat, and that’s okay. If you are at least somewhat capable of speaking to someone whom you find mildly attractive (granted, if you’re reading this website, unlikely), then find them, speak to them, remove one earbud from your head and put it in theirs, hit play and hold each other close. It’s gonna be a hot summer. Have a good weekend.
