There’s a New Category of Coffee Snob

Photos by Maclay Heriot

So you think you’re a coffee snob, do you?

You know how to tamp with just the right amount of pressure, use filtered water and you even purge the wand with every use, whatever that means. More importantly though: are you a milk snob? Because we’re here to argue that the right milk is as important as the right bean, and we decided to drop by one of our favourite local haunts to test out the theory with the relatively new kid on the block (oat milk) and the people who do it the best (MILKLAB).

If there’s one place in Bondi that’s got taste—in terms of beverages and attire—then it’s Saturdays NYC. If you’ve never had the pleasure of dropping by, here’s what you’re missing out on. Fitted out with locally sourced materials and timber, the sun-filled storefront is part retail, part coffee spot, so you can order your coffee through the window, and pull up on one of the outdoor benches in the sun to enjoy one of the best coffees in town.

Which is exactly what we did, dropping by to ask Saturdays barista Coxy to kindly brew up some MILKLAB Oat caps, and get to the bottom of why oat milk’s got more votes of confidence than the Australian government right now. All aboard the cappuccino bus. Honk-honk!

Made by Baristas, For Baristas

If you want a good coffee, you’re not going to make three-quarters of it from subpar milk. You wouldn’t put vegetable oil in your Ferrari now, would you? Saturdays know good coffee, and they’re not skimping on the milk, using only products greenlit by baristas. Not only does MILKLAB Oat get the tick of approval from Coxy here, but the milk itself was also made by baristas, so they know their stuff.

Closest Dupe for Dairy

Of all the plant-based milks, oat milk is actually the closest you can get to the real deal. The other milks try hard, they really do, but if you want a creamy coffee that’s an almost an exact dupe of dairy milk, sayonara soy and adios almond—oat’s blowing you out of the water. Look at the pour! The pics don’t lie, and neither does Coxy.

It’s Actually Good For You

Dairy-free, twice the fibre of dairy milk, cholesterol-free, no added sugar and made with 100% Australian oats, so go ahead and knock back a few MILKLAB Oat flatties every day, guilt-free. It’s rare case of ‘good and good for you,’ so take that win because it doesn’t happen often.

It Makes Good Coffee Even Better

The rich and oaty flavour is super subtle, which complements espresso coffee like a dream. We haven’t met a better pairing since Kel and Kath Day-Night. Beautiful stuff. If we’ve won you over and you want to try it out for yourself, drop by your local cafe and ask them to froth you up a MILKLAB Oat coffee. Just don’t start taking photos of them, the way we did Coxy. That’d be creepy.
