Six Mandatory Australian Gigs In December
Words by Riki Wells.
It’s been a long year, full of music, art, love, freak weather events, and 20th birthday parties.
As such, your soul is probably yearning for some live music. As such, we’ve put together a list for you to decide how to satisfy your cravings.
Alvvays
So dreamy yet so real, Alvvays is returning to Australia for the first time since 2019, promising to bring their newest offering ‘Blue Revs’ to fans down under. Intricate and addictive, the band is taking their sound all over the country, including a particularly exciting set at the highly anticipated Meredith Music Festival, ‘the world's best festival.’ While some shows on the tour are sold out, test your luck with tickets anyway.
Allah-Las
Coming off the back of this year's release, full length LP ‘Zuma 85’, Californian hazy-rock outfit Allah-Las take on a sunny Australian summer. Leaving behind convention, the previously ‘surf rock/jangle folk’ band are taking a dive into a world of new sound, taking on prog and art rock headfirst. Catch the team hitting the best venues in your city.
The War On Drugs
One of rock music’s most acclaimed acts, The War on Drugs, is set to take on some of the most iconic venues in Australia this December. Joined by Grammy-nominated rock outfit, Spoon, and Australia's own Indigo Sparkle, the shows will span from classics to new hits, satisfying all your War on Drugs cravings.
Flowdan
One of the most influential artists in UK Grime, Flowdan has hit the international mainstream this year with features on massive Skrillex and Chase & Status tracks, capturing a certain energy completely foreign to overseas shores. Spanning over two decades, the East London MC has both an impressive catalog, and an impressive stamina, consistently playing shows for the last twenty years. Australia hasn’t had a huge taste of this, until now, catch Flowdan this month in most major cities!
Billy Charles & Arthington Stack
Taking on Australia’s east coast, Billy Charles & Arthington Stack are set to bring their innovative ‘Feast of Saint Nikolas’ tour to you sound hungry punters. Last seen sharing the same stage in succession at the Brunswick Ballroom, the pair present two completely unique performances, tapping into previously unexplored sonic lands. If this sounds like you, grab a ticket for Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane!
SBTRKT
Some of you will remember the pure electricity coming out of SBTRKT’s early music. Maybe you heard Pharaohs, from that first album, or XL’s re-release of Wildfire. Either way, you know SBTRKT is, arguably, the quintessential experimental pop artist of the early 2010’s. Hitting up the late December festival circuit, and throwing in a couple side shows along the way, it’s gonna be an unforgettable party!
