Red Bull Skate Tales With Atita Verghese
Red Bull Skate Tales is a show that follows professional skateboarder Madars Apse to all corners of the world, getting the stories of skateboarders that we don’t normally hear.
From Madars homeland of Latvia to India, he is on the search for the stories of the misfits, mavericks and pioneers who define the culture and community of skateboarding. It is a sport for weirdos after all. The stories unravel from the one simple question Madars comes prepared with: ‘What does skateboarding mean to you?’ It’s a question so simple but also very deep as every skateboarder has their own unique answer to that question. The show is now in its third season, launching the first three episodes of a six-episode season last week on June 6th. Now it’s time for the next three on Red Bull TV. You’ve now visited Vitoria Mendonca’s hometown of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. You’ve seen the way 2014 Thrasher Skater of the Year Wes Kremer lives an analog life with no need for an iPhone or Instagram in San Diego, California while also heading to Japan to meet up with one of the godfathers of Japanese skateboarding, Takahiro Morita.
This week it’s time for you to get acquainted with Atita Verghese, the first female pro skateboarder in India. In this episode, you’ll be getting to know her and the Holystoked Crew, an amazing group of people who built the first DIY skatepark in Atita’s hometown of Bangalore. Atita has not only broken through the walls of India’s societal norms to get where she is now but has inspired generations of women worldwide with her extreme commitment and support to her local skate scene. Through her NGO Girls Skate India which aims to foster community, she has encouraged more girls in the country to pick up a skateboard and organised several skateboarding events across the country since the organisation’s inception in 2015.
