Photo Op: LCD Soundsystem, c. 2010
We made a documentary about Nancy Whang, LCD Soundsystem’s front (literally front and center of the stage) woman, called I Think I’m Here, which is available to stream right now, here.
Making that film was a very long but very fun process. We got to see the band play (a lot), hang out at Nancy’s house and admire all of her vintage Ikea, bond with her dog, Doris, and get to know a side of a person that we’d only ever seen playing our favorite songs on a stage that feels miles away from the back of a massive festival crowd. One of the best parts of making this film were all of the strange people we got to meet along the way. In particular, photographer Ruvan Wijesooriya. He is a master of the lens, because I mean, sure, duh, you have to be in order to be a photographer, but there’s something beyond that necessary to be a good photographer. Any dunce can click a button. Ruvan is a master of the moment - the elusive and treasured fraction of a second seen from just the right angle and space.
In the early 2010’s and even before, Ruvan did an excellent job of capturing LCD Soundsystem’s moments as they occurred from coast to beautiful coast. These photos are featured heavily in the documentary, so much so that we were asked about them more than once, so we thought we’d share them with you all.
Our documentary is available to be streamed at MCTV here, and Ruvan Wijesooriya’s book from the time, LCD, featuring these photos and so many more, can be found here.
