Obibini Surf Club
Until recent years, the beaches of Ghana were reserved only for fishermen with an emphasis on men.
The fierce rips further perpetuated a culturally ingrained fear of drowning, certainly not the restoritive place many of us enjoy it for. It wasn’t until Justice Kwofie and his six brothers who founded Obibini Surf Club did the local’s fears of the sea and surrounding gender based inequality start to dissipate. Obibini, a film directed by Benoit Lalande explores the story of the young female surfers of Ghana as they move away from the constrictive notions of domestic life to enjoy the freedoms of the ocean and surfing. The initative which now includes over ten female surfers is a small shift, but if anything a reminder to reflect on how lucky we are to grow up in a country where going down for a swim is as engrained and enjoyed in our lives as a morning coffee.
