Monster Children’s Sun Up—Sun Down Guide to Byron Bay
Presented in partnership with Sunly Seltzer, the alcoholic sparkling refreshment.
Chances are if you live in Australia—or almost anywhere in the world, for that matter—you’ve probably visited the most Eastern point of Australia: Byron Bay.
But if you haven’t, and are planning to, this article is even more relevant. You could easily day-trip, stay overnight, stay for two weeks or even ten-years in Byron, because its appeal is endless. With great food, great bars, beaches, hinterland, beautiful people, and a slow-paced lifestyle, Byron Bay is highly attractive.
We teamed up with some friends of ours in town to show us a good time and the beauty of Byron Bay thanks to Sunly Seltzer. You know, the drink everyone will be wrapping their lips around this summer, the gluten-free, low-sugar, vegan drink that has you waking up feeling better than you did the day before drinking it. Well, if you haven’t tried it you’re missing out and we are going to point you in the right direction for the best place in Byron to drink one and to buy one for all of us regular folk that don’t live in Byron. Below is MC’s guide to Byron, tips and tricks on where to swim, drink, eat and sleep while you’re in Byron Bay.
Coffee:
Coffee. No good day has ever started without coffee and if you visit our friends at the Top Shop, they’ll give you coffee and let you lay on their carefully mowed lawn while you refresh your feed five or six times and sip until you decide it’s time to do something meaningful with your day.
What to do:
Surf. Byron has no shortage of beaches and space to spread out. So, while it’s appealing to go straight to the Pass and sit next to the rock with everyone else, think about exploring the less hectic stretches of Belongil, Tallows or Main Beach and secure some sand for yourself. There’s good vibes in the water, but remember if you’re out of town mind your manners. There’s a lot of people in the water so giving a wave to someone else and just having a good attitude can go a long way for your wave karma.
Swim. Tucked away in the hinterlands are hundreds of waterfalls and swimming holes. Minyon Falls, Bexhill Quarry, Killen Falls, Keys Bridge, Protestors Falls to name a few. But to find those secret hidden gems, you’ll need to ask around. Have a beer at a hinterlands pub, ask a local and set off on an adventure.
If you’re at the point looking down the beach the sunsets over the water as you watch everyone bounce around in that golden light. Afternoon pass sessions are some of the best, even on small days
EAT. Food. Where do we start? Where do we stop? There are so many good options and not a lot of bad ones. The Roadhouse, The Top Shop, The Treehouse, The Farm, Bel Oporto (If ya know, ya know). Doma Sushi. Some of the best Japanese food you’ve eaten in a long time, outside of the motherland. Nestled amongst the trees up in the hills at Federal, this family-owned and operated restaurant has a great outdoor space, good vibes and great food.
On Thursdays, head on up to Bexhill for Bexhill woodfired pizza. BYO booze or grab something from the bottle shop next door order a woodfired pizza and kickback in the garden. Always a good time.
Drink:
There’s endless bars, restaurants, and hilly vantage points where you can (legally, please) enjoy a drink and reflect on the day you’ve just had, and if you’ve followed any of our pointers it would’ve been a pretty bloody good one. Here are just a few of our favourite boozers:
Balcony Bar
The Beach Hotel
Sunset at The Pass
Stone & Wood Brewery
The Northern
The Eltham
A mates backyard
The shower
If you don’t happen to be in Byron or plan on travelling there any time soon why not sick back and enjoy a Sunly Seltzer in your own backyard. Check out where to buy them from right HERE!
