Meet PENTA, Our Favourite Swingers
In celebration of PENTA being the first and only golf company to ever grace the insides of Monster Children Magazine, we thought it was about time to introduce you to the brand who were cool enough to do it.
Welcoming PENTA, an independent golf clothing brand inspired by the game’s enduring style and the people who play it. Now I am no golfer but if I was I’d be wearing PENTA, and if I wasn’t I’d be wearing PENTA. The boys behind the brand are constantly asking me to come play golf with them, mostly because I suck so it makes them look good but also because, as it turns out, golf is best enjoyed with friends and I can get around that no matter how shit I am at it. We headed to Playfair to shank some balls and I was still shit, but I did hit one ball properly and that’s what they keep telling me is what keeps you coming back. What was missing in golf that made you start your brand?
There were really no local brands at the time that spoke to the style we wanted to wear on the course. The choices for younger players were honestly quite narrow, at least in terms of being technical while still looking good. Conversations between us eventually led to deciding to build something of our own, something that spoke more to the people who shared our interests on and off the course.
Say it’s my first time out there, what is the number one piece of advice you’re giving me?
Just enjoy being out there with friends and try not to smack the shit out of the ball.
Why do you think so many surfers and skaters play golf?
There’s a lot of similarities. They’re super technical, you’re up against yourself most of the time, and it requires dedication to get better. Plus, there is the social side of it. We love the idea of different people coming together on the course, there’s something really positive about that.
What’s some cool lingo I can start saying that makes me start sounding like I know what I’m talking about?
The less you say the better.
Noted (laughs). What are some of your top places to go play golf at?
Anywhere on the Northern Beaches, we’re lucky to have really nice courses but Warringah Golf Club is our local. Shout out to Rob and Greg at the Pro Shop. Oh and Shortees!
How do you get over the frustration of not being immediately good at a sport like golf despite being a naturally sporty person?
First, you’d have to ask some naturally sporty people. But if we had to give some advice… play with good golfers. The humiliation will do you wonders.
What is the best lesson golf teaches you?
Patience. Golf is a mental challenge that can really trick you into making the wrong decision. It takes a lot of time to improve on your technique and you need to be thinking a couple of moves ahead.
Do you think Monster Children should integrate golf as a pillar?
Nah, we think that a lot of golfers are the Monster Children community already – skaters, surfers, musicians, and whoever else. Plus it would probably give one of the Monster Children founders a heart attack.
Will Penta make me swing better?
