Listen: Ela Minus’ ‘DIA’

DIA the new album by Ela Minus is a lesson in sound design and magnetising song structures.

Hailing from Columbia, Ela Minus is an artist blending electronics meet singer-songwriter skills with a background playing drums in Bogotá rock bands around the world. A lover of synths and sequencers, DIA is her first album following a series of self released EPs exploring themes of rebellion and making sense of the world. The album is a mix of pop and experiential, something a little different for you on this lovely Friday afternoon. Here’s our quick chat with Ela below.

How did you find yourself in the art of music making?

I started very, very young and I have never stopped. So I ask myself that same question every day. It just feels right.

You moved around a lot finishing your upcoming album, do you think each place influenced each song?

In some ways yes, but I also think the reality of moving around so much influenced how I was feeling in the world, and that influenced a lot more what I wrote than the places themselves.

What do you hope people will get out of this album?

My only hope is that they feel things.

What did you get out of this album, other than the obvious album?

I don't expect to get anything out of music, that is not why I make it.

Are you someone who makes music and cares about what people think about it or are you just concerned with how it feels for you?

It's impossible to not care about what other people think, I would be lying if I said I didn't care, of course, I do. It affects me way more than I wish it did, but that is just a consequence of doing what I love and releasing it, a price to pay -to put it in words. Apart from the actual music, making it and playing it: everything else around it that comes with the work feels like a price to pay for me. And at the end of the day, to answer your question more directly, when I’m actually making the music, in that moment I only care about how it feels to me.

What do you do for fun outside of music?

Read, walk, go on hikes, watch movies, teach.

Will Golden Plains and Pitch be your first time out to Australia?

Yes.

You seem to have a great stack of shows coming up too, are you excited or nervous? How are you feeling about being on the road so much?

I'm very excited to play, I don't enjoy traveling, but hopefully the shows feel so fulfilling that they make it all worth it.

What are you most looking forward to in 2025?

Being present.
