Agbayas in Lagos: Photos of Life and Skateboarding in Nigeria by Drake Johnson

‘chief priest at olumo rock.’

All photography by Drake Johnson.

A few weeks ago, Salad Days Of Skateboarding headed over to Lagos, Nigeria, to begin on their latest endeavor: fostering a connection with and support of the Nigerian skate scene, ultimately culminating in the construction of the first concrete skatepark in Lagos, in partnership with WAF (a if not the local Nigerian skate brand) and Wonders Around the World.

On every excursion, Salad Days brings skate supplies to support the local scene, as well as skaters to inspire and connect with. This time around, Drake Johnson got to go, and he brought a few cameras with him. Drake is an absurdly if not obnoxiously talented skater as well as an equally talented photographer, and we are happy to be able to host his photographic experience shot completely on film.

It’s easy to imagine, but difficult to understand, places and cultures as far from us here in Sydney or LA or NYC as Nigeria, and to have them focused through the perspective of an individual and with the understanding that skateboarding provides, these photos help bring Nigeria to life. From land to sea to rock to skate, this is Agbayas in Lagos.
