Salute The Sun

It's pretty damn dreary here in New York right now. Weather reports are calling for a late season snow storm. One plus though, is that there should be waves tomorrow. Came across this little gem today and couldn't think of a better Yin to New York's Yang right now.

Khalik Allah

Khalik Allah

I grew up with Khalik in the same town on Long Island. We played in the same soccer league as kids which is pretty common in a suburban town. Early on I remember him getting into skateboarding which he was really good at and dedicated to. Soon after, he started to breakdance and formed his own crew and would cruise to different parties and battle. Keep in mind, this was probably in 5th and 6th grade. Pretty sure he did this up until high school. It was then that I didn't really see him around that much. In high school, he started venturing into the city and exploring the fruits of the city's culture that was absent in suburban Long Island. He found his way up to Harlem and started to get schooled in the ways of the Five Percenter's. It spoke to him in a way that he became immersed in it's lessons and dedicated his existence to the school of the God's and the Earth's. He linked with members of the Wu Tang Clan soon finding himself traveling the globe with them. It was during this time he found a camera in his hand's and a new chapter of his life began. He has since been taking amazing photos and recently gained attention and praise from photographer Cheryl Dunn who profiled him on her everybody street blog. Khalik just dropped his own photo site which should stay on the radar for those a fan of the street photography genre.

When I was mega grom status, my dad would bring me along to the surf flicks screened at the local surf shop. Just to date it, this is when the whole "The Search" campaign for Rip Curl was popping off. Rip Curl was in town premiering their new "Search" video. Sonny Miller was still filming them too at the time. I think there was at least a 10 year age gap to the next youngest person there. A frosty keg pumped away and hoots roared during the flick. Afterwards, a raffle went down and being the youngest in the room, they had me pick the winning tickets out of a hat. Being a ticket puller, naturally I was not allowed in the raffle. Can't even remember what they were giving away. What I will always remember though is Rip Curl hooking me up with a VHS box set of "The Search" series. In there, was "Searching for Tom Curren". Major score! In short, if "Searching for Tom Curren" or just plain old Tom Curren is a favorite of yours, get yourself to the Wythe Hotel this Friday, November 30th.

"I Need A Vacation!" "I Need A Vacation!"

"I Need A Vacation!"
Posted By Johnny - 13.11.2012

ALLDAYEVERYDAY is pleased to present “I Need A Vacation!" a group photo exhibition curated by Jake Sumner and Dean Levin.

“I Need A Vacation!” turns back the clock to sunnier times. For this exhibition the curators invited a group of artists and photographers to contribute 4” x 6” snapshot images from destinations as diverse as China, Italy, Alaska, Long Island, and Roswell. The exhibition explores the free-spirited language of the vacation snapshot and the tendency to idealize the past. While some take a more traditional approach and others challenge the notion of what a vacation picture can mean, the theme through all is a reflection on better times and how we memorialize these moments that never last.

November 16 – 18, 2012 Opening: November 16th from 7-10pm

All proceeds from the show will be donated to the Bowery Mission Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.

Wake Up, It\'s Over

The good lad's over at What Youth have a great little short film they produced featuring some of the young gunners of today absolutely smashing a right point break in Japan. The film also captures some out of the water antics in Osaka in a karaoke bar bleary eyed and slurry just how we like to see them. Watching it, I couldn't help but contrast to a Sonny Miller clip over a decade ago when the young guns of that time were having their romp in Japan. Both seem to be having a blast in the land of the rising sun.

Andy Warhol's Surf San Diego, which depicts an unhappily married couple kicking around the shores of La Jolla with a band of surfers, will be shown in theaters for the first time on October 16th at New York's Museum of Modern Art. MOMA is billing the screening as a world premier, and plans on showing the film publicly from January 23 to 28th. The mystique surrounding this film lies in the fact that Warhol never got to complete the project, and it ended up being the last film he ever worked on. It was not untill the Andy Warhol Foundation granted Paul Morrissey the rights to finish editing it that it was completed. For more info click here.

This is an amazing clip from Volcom's Coming of Ageless series. All I can think about when watching something like this, is the unbelievable audio that must be going on inside the barrel. Go-Pro's have become common place these days so how neat would it be if guys started recording audio inside the tube? Not sure how you would go about doing that, but one can only dream.

The cleverly fashioned Bodega Bag–designed by Parson's graduate Aria McManus– recently won top honors at the American Design Club Raw & Unfiltered show. Influenced by urban living, Aris sought a way to take a commonly used item such as a bag from a bodega and make it a bit chic-er. The set comes with interchangeable bags. Tuesday September 4th from 7-9pm the Still House Group in Red Hook, Brooklyn is hosting an opening reception for Jack Greer's solo show "Shopping For New Furniture". In Greer's latest show he explores how works in the show communicate with one another through the positioning of them in the gallery. How one painting talks to another painting hung across from it, how a figure in a photograph talks to a drawing above it, and how the instillation talks to the room it sits in. Ultimately, exploring the metaphysical relationship between objects, people, and the conversation Greer himself aims to orchestrate. Following the reception, a performance by Spankrock will begin at 9pm. 481 Van Brunt Street, Brooklyn.
